shape of magic

A Collaboration with EC (@erroneouschoices) – “When love rules, there is no will to power.” ~ Carl Jung

I always knew I wanted magic, but I spent years confusing it with surrender. I thought magic would bend toward me, lower its head, let me believe love was simply shared devotion softened by candlelight. That it must be holy because it glowed. I answered prayers in my own voice and called it love. I wanted your silence to turn toward mine, wanted the hush around you to part like tall grass under my hand, wanted your nearness to prove itself in ways I could recognize and name and keep.

I dream of every detail of your day
and I need every touch
of your midnight movements
I’ve never wanted things
just whispers across my thighs
and sunlit rooms
I never knew I wanted magic

But magic was never the kneeling. It was dirt under the nails. It was blood staying warm in the body. It was the animal truth of a creature that does not come closer because it has been conquered. It comes close only in the impossible moment it feels free enough to stay. It was your quiet keeping its shape. It was your sacred edges remaining unbroken beside mine. The wild thing staying wild and still allowing itself to be seen. I had thought love meant arrival. It turns out it means standing near without owning.

Everyday we are a different storm,
we call our shadows intimacy
and our fear shelter.
Sometimes I feel the sudden alchemy
of whispers and spilled ink
as you recite my feelings through your finger tips.
It’s just a matter of time

That knowledge changed the air around everything. The silent room. The bed still holding your heat. The sunlight on the wall. The ordinary holiness of you moving through your own weather. I stopped calling your shape distance. I stopped calling your edges loss. I stopped mistaking my own voice for God. And in that smaller, truer world, something opened that force never could. Not a gate. Not a wound. Not surrender. Just the fact of you, wholly yourself, beside me.
